Technology [A-C]


Accessibility
A characteristic of technology that enables people with disabilities to use it. For example, accessible websites can be navigated by people with visual, hearing, motor, or cognitive impairments. Accessible design also benefits people with older or slower software and hardware.

AMPS (Academic Media Production Services)
MIT organization that provides multimedia, video, web, videoconferencing, and course management educational technology services to the MIT community.

API (Application Program Interface)
The set of tools used by a programmer to create a computer program.

Applet
A program designed to be executed from within another application. See also Java applet.

Application
Computer software; also called a program. There are many types of software that fit into the category of application. Application software is distinct from other forms of software, such as operating system and utility software.

Assessment
The process used to systematically evaluate a learner's skill or knowledge level.

Asynchronous
In telecommunications context: describes communications in which data can be transmitted intermittently rather than in a steady stream.

Asynchronous learning
Learning in which interaction between instructors and students occurs intermittently with a time delay. Examples are self-paced courses taken via the Internet or CD-ROM, Q&A mentoring, online discussion groups, and e-mail.

ATIC, as part of MIT Information Systems, provides Information Technology (IT) services to MIT students and staff who have disabilities

Audio
The term "audio" is synonymous with sound and is used more in TV production than in motion picture production; as in "audio/video" ("sound-and-picture").

Authoring tool
A software application or program used by trainers and instructional designers to create e-learning courseware. Types of authoring tools include instructionally focused authoring tools, Web authoring and programming tools, template-focused authoring tools, knowledge capture systems, and text and file creation tools.

Avatar
A graphical icon that represents a real person in a cyberspace system. In e-learning, avatars usually represent the learners. The term comes from a Sanskrit word meaning an incarnation in human form.

Blog (web log)
A web page that serves as a publicly accessible personal journal for an individual. Typically updated daily, blogs often reflect the personality of the author.
Bluetooth
A short-range radio technology aimed at simplifying communications among internet devices and between devices and the Internet.

Bookmark
A web page link stored in a browser for quick and easy retrieval.

Broadband
A type of data transmission in which a single medium (wire) can carry several channels at once. Cable TV, for example, uses broadband transmission. Broadband technology can transmit data, audio, and video all at once over long distances.

Broadcast
To simultaneously send the same message to multiple recipients. Broadcasting is a useful feature in e-mail systems.

Browser
A software application used to locate and display web pages.

Cable modem
A device that allows computer data to be transferred through the cable wire common in most households. Cable modems allow for fast transfer rates in comparison to traditional (28.8, 56k, and even ISDN) modems.
CD-ROM (Compact Disc Read-Only Memory or Compact Disc Read-Only Media)
A computer storage medium similar to the audio CD that can hold more than 600 megabytes of read-only digital information.

Certification
1) A credential acknowledging that an individual has demonstrated a minimum level of knowledge or competence, as defined by a professional standards organization.
2) A program that evaluates products or tools according to predetermined criteria, such as ASTD's E-Learning Courseware Certification (eCC).

Chat
Real-time text-based communication in a virtual environment. Chat can be used in e-learning for student questions, instructor feedback, or even group discussion.

Class management tools
Applications or modules that can be used to facilitate the administration of a class for instructional staff, enhance collaboration and communication among students and staff, or manage class materials by staff and students.
